I hope you all enjoyed the first sermon as much as I did. As I listened, I tried to purposely listen through the lens of "summer 2016." I had a few questions for Jesus (in my head) going into the sermon. "What do you want to show/teach us as an admin team going into training weekends? Going into summer? School? Work? In my family? On and on the list can go!
DJ offered three potential reasons why he thought Jesus chose to pray out loud. Whether right or wrong, DJ's three offerings redirected my attention from summer, work, school, family, and placed my attention on Jesus. Can't go wrong with that!
I wrote them down for us.
1. So we might know what is on the heart of Jesus. His hearts desire.
2. So we might know what He will be praying on the throne. Hebrews text - "He is always making intercession for us..."
3. So we might be caught up in His prayer - enter into His heart.
I was encouraged and reminded that Jesus was all about bringing glory to His Father.
John 17:1 - "Father, the hour has come; glorify Thy son, that the son may glorify Thee!"
John 17:4 - "I glorified Thee on earth..."
John 17:5 - "Glorify Me together with Thyself...."
What does Jesus want? He wants to glorify the Father! He wants the Father's name to be known intimately like He knows it. He invites us into this gloriously intimate relationship between Him and His father and offers us that "glory!" (John 17:22) Miracle of miracles, Jesus invites us into His wonderful ministry on the waters of Shasta and the Delta this summer. Even before the summer, right now - every waking moment, He invites us into this awkwardly intimate relationship between Him and His Father and all He wants me to "do" is "know" it and "believe" it!!!!
"Jesus the son, lived and died to honor His Father. Jesus lived and died to manifest the glory of His Father in order to show us who the Father is and what the Father is like." - DJ
I pray that I (we) may know and believe all that Jesus prays in John 17!
