While listening to DJ explain the context that the Philippian
Christians were living in at the time of this letter, I was struck by how incredibly
NOT easy following Jesus is. Or can be. Like Torrey mentioned, I feel a
resistance to Paul’s words. I relish in the romance of Jesus stooping lower,
taking on the form of a servant, but I falter when I realize that to “conduct
myself in a manner worthy of the Gospel” means that I myself need take on the
form of a servant.
Paul asks the Philippians in verse 2:2 to “complete my joy
by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of
one mind.” As followers of Jesus we are united under the Spirit of God that
transforms us into the same image of God. If we are not of this same image, then
may God show us where we are hiding from His light.
Despite the persecution that Paul and the Philippians were
facing, Paul speaks about the life and joy and light of following Christ. He
speaks of the true affection that he has for the Philippians with whom he is
united. So it is not easy, but it is good. It is so true that we never graduate
from Jesus school.
I’m looking forward to jumping in with you all this weekend
and throughout the summer. Being transformed into one mind – the mind of Jesus,
the greatest (lowest?) servant of them all! It is not easy, but it is good!
