I often hear people throw around sayings like "I'm always here for you!" or "Call me whenever and I'll be there." Although these statements are said with genuine intentions, this sermon reminded me that only God can be the one to confidently say this to us.
Even the most intentional and authentic people can't fully support everyone in their lives. I think about how important it is to be interruptable and support those around you but it reminds me of a piece of advice a good friend of mine gave me: Point them toward the Savior, don't be their savior.
That piece of advice came to me in a time in my life when I was feeling pushed past my capacity to support someone I couldn't. I think it speaks volumes of your trust in Jesus to admit to someone you alone can't support them. Pointing them toward Jesus as the one who will ALWAYS pick up when they call.
God pretty much gives us his cell phone number on speed dial to call on him whenever. He wants us to rely on Him and lean on Him in good and bad.
I don't think he wants us to be butt dialing him though! This would be using his name without recognizing its power and purpose.
Other points I loved:
- "Show me you are redeemed and I will believe in your Redeemer"
- The importance of names! Not only does it matter in our relationship with God but our relationship with people. BEMI - learn camper names! It shows how much we care :)
- "I was the one who is/ I am the one who is/ I will be the one who is" Past present and future!
"Point them toward the Savior, don't be their savior" Love that!
ReplyDeleteAHhhahah! Call God...don't butt dial Him! That's awesome. I also love the connection you made at the end to BEMI and learning campers' names. It's so important and this sermon has been helping me understand why.
