Why We Read the Owner's Manual

I am really enjoying this series – here are just some thoughts on the first sermon in the series:

The 10 commandments are instruments for freedom, revealing to us the manufacturer’s specifications for our lives. As DJ would put it : “When in doubt, READ THE OWNER’S MANUAL!” The owner’s manual that is designed to protect and enhance a life of freedom.

What a beautiful way to understand the laws of God as they are designed to be – not an imposition on human nature, but an exposition of human nature – a tool for freedom!

I see the same heart behind our super-ultra packet. The culture-points, schedules, orientations, rules, etc., are not designed to be an oppressive and prohibitive imposition, but instead a revelation of the heart of our ministry. Each element of that packet reveals the meaning, the lifeblood, of everything at SSCM. Each page is designed to protect and enhance a life of freedom on the water for campers, youth staff, barneys, trainees, drivers, and admin, like Dylan was saying.

WOW, I mean, I’ve always been a bit of a rule follower, but DJs sermons are revealing the deep LOVE of the commandments in a new way to me. Excited for the next one!

  2. I love how you connected it to the super-ultra packet. It's so true! At first it can look like a set of rules but once you experience them they set you free - just like the 10 commandments.
    Thanks for sharing Mirm
